The AMASING Symphony Orchestra began in 2020 under the direction of Maestro Eliseu Silva. It emerged from the desire of a group of musicians to create a musical project of high artistic level in an innovative format, addressing some social, pedagogical, and cultural needs. Initially named after António Fragoso, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of this young and skilled composer’s death, the orchestra developed a pioneering hybrid structure. This means it includes highly skilled members with master’s and doctoral degrees in music, as well as non-professional members who are either still in the process of artistic development or who have high musical and artistic training but chose careers in other fields such as Medicine, Engineering, or Law, while still wanting to maintain contact with musical performance and creation.
With a recent rebranding to the AMASING Symphony Orchestra, it typically performs in a symphonic formation but also appears in smaller formations such as the AMASING String Orchestra. The orchestra performs concerts in various emblematic locations in the city of Porto, including the Municipal Theater of Porto – Rivoli, the Forte de São João da Foz, the Church of São João da Foz, the Main Church of Aldoar, and the Palacete Pinto Leite, among others. Notable performances also include concerts at the Philharmonic Auditorium of Covões, Cantanhede, and the Pombeiro Monastery, Felgueiras, participation in the CONVIMUS Festival in 2022 and 2023, and a tour in France as part of the Portugal-France Season 2022. Additionally, the orchestra has recorded its first CD, “Noturno,” filmed a music video at the Forte de São João da Foz, and recorded a video for participation in the Final Concert of the Hong Kong International Music Festival.
